What is Long Term Care?

When a loved one begins to need help with daily activities, families often face difficult decisions about care. Long-term care is not limited to nursing homes—it includes a wide range of services that help individuals manage daily living when age, illness, disability, or cognitive decline makes independent living difficult.

Long-term care may include help with bathing, dressing, eating, mobility, toileting, medication management, meal preparation, and supervision for individuals with memory loss or cognitive impairment. 

For many families, staying at home as long as possible is the preferred option. Care in familiar surroundings can provide greater comfort, independence, and stability. Wisconsin offers Medicaid-funded programs that support home and community-based care, helping many individuals avoid institutional placement.

Programs such as Family Care and IRIS (Include, Respect, I Self-Direct) can provide support with caregiving, personal care, transportation, household tasks, and other services needed to maintain safety and independence. In some cases, these programs may also allow certain family members—including spouses and adult children—to serve as paid caregivers.

Long-term care planning involves not only deciding where care will be provided, but also addressing financial eligibility, Medicaid planning, caregiver support, and future healthcare needs. Early planning can help protect assets while ensuring a loved one receives necessary care.
