Shaughnessy P. Murphy

Professional Experience

Growing up in Eau Claire, Shaughnessy witnessed first-hand the positive impact small business has on a growing community.  As an attorney, he’s motivated to play a role in the area’s continued growth and revitalization.  At Ruder Ware, Shaughnessy not only works with small businesses, but with businesses of all sizes as well as financial institutions and municipalities.  Primarily his practice includes counseling clients in various types of matters including mergers, acquisitions, entity conversions, and lease and sale agreements.

Prior to joining Ruder Ware, Shaughnessy served as a senior leadership aide in the U.S. House of Representatives and was recognized on Roll Call’s “Fabulous 50” list of most influential congressional staffers.  Drawing on his business and legislative experience, Shaughnessy provides strategic guidance dealing with federal and state legislative processes to clients who desire the ability to better anticipate and respond to government related challenges and obstacles.

Recent engagements include:

  • Assisted multiple businesses and trade associations with the preparation and adoption of foreign sanctions and trade regulation compliance policies.
  • Negotiated a long-term exclusive distributorship agreement for a multistate sand, stone, and aggregate equipment dealer
  • Represented landowners in complex negotiations with an energy company regarding a fifty-year solar panel lease
  • Provided strategic guidance to a start-up health insurance company to navigate the regulatory compliance requirements and various administrative and management service agreements
  • Counseled dental practices in their acquisition and expansion
  • Assisted women business owners with successful certification of their businesses as Women Owned Business Enterprise at both the state and national level
  • Drafted and assisted in the enactment of ordinances for municipalities
  • Advised financial institutions on various aspects of expansion, merger, and sale transactions
  • Prepared regulatory applications and offerings to the SEC and other state and federal agencies.

Shaughnessy’s professional career started at an early age.  By the age of 10, he had acted in numerous nationally syndicated and local television commercials, programs, and movies.  But he had his sights set on the bright lights of Eau Claire, not Hollywood and retired from his acting career.  When Shaughnessy is not watching re-runs of his commercials, he can be found on a golf course demonstrating to his sons how not to hit a golf ball.
