Professional Experience

A natural leader and charismatic individual, Dan courageously battled brain cancer with a grace and resolve that inspired all around him. He lived with a contagious drive and passion, applying it to all areas of his life. Dan loved being an attorney. He practiced law at Ruder Ware for nearly 20 years with a focus and passion that his peers respected, setting the bar high and expecting all to follow his example. Stew Etten, President of Ruder Ware comments, "Dan was an outstanding lawyer, a consummate professional, and a friend to all of us. He showed us how to live life to its fullest under difficult circumstances. We will miss him greatly."

He cultivated meaningful relationships with his clients, striving to be their trusted advisor and an approachable attorney. Many clients consider Dan a friend.

His impact at Ruder Ware was significant. Most notably:

  • He led and managed the development of Ruder Ware’s Fiduciary Services department. This important service empowers our attorneys to provide peace of mind for clients by carrying out their wishes for family and friends.
  • Dan co-chaired the firm’s Ag Focus Team leading the charge to hire Ag Consultant, Mike Wildeck. Dan worked hard to build trust within the tight knit community assisting countless producers on their succession plans. He frequently presented on this topic. Most recently he was sought after by the World Dairy Expo to present at the 2015 Expo in Madison, Wis. The show attracts nearly 75,000 attendees from around the world – it’s arguably the dairy industry’s largest show.
  • He chaired the firm’s Trusts & Estates Practice Group setting the pace and outlining the goals for the highly successful group. His leadership has been invaluable to the many attorneys and staff he managed.

Dan was committed to the Wausau community. He loved the area and was an outspoken advocate for everything that made Wausau better and different – from brew pubs to hiking trails. When Dan wasn’t practicing law, he could be found cycling, kayaking, hiking … usually all within the same day. He was incredibly active and athletic. That’s why it’s no surprise he was recently awarded the YMCA’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his 20 years of service to the organization as benefactor, board member, foundation board member, fundraiser, and trusted advisor.

Most importantly, Dan was a proud father and husband. In everything he did, his family was his first priority. He was quick, always with a smile, to regale their accomplishments and good deeds - there never seemed to be a shortage of those stories.

Dan will be greatly missed by his friends at Ruder Ware.
